On August 18th a number of the best-known ocean racing sailboats in the New England area will converge on Newport for the start of the Ida Lewis Yacht Club Long Distance Race. Inaugurated in 2004 and held every other year, the race is run over a 250 mile “ocean triangle course” from Newport and then around marks on the outer coast of Long Island, Martha’s Vineyard and Montauk Point.

Organizers of the event expect several 80’ Maxi racers to compete, as well as an exciting fleet of smaller competitors. Onlookers can expect an exciting spectacle as the huge racing craft maneuver in tight quarters before the start signal, which scheduled to be at 4:00 PM on Friday the 18th in the waters between Fort Adams and Rose Island. Following the start, the fleet will beat out the East Passage past Castle Hill and then off to the first mark. The prime location to see the start will be from the south tip of Fort Adams or from Castle Hill or Brenton Park. |
The first boats should finish off Ida Lewis Yacht Club sometime Saturday afternoon, with the smaller boats coming in at intervals through the night. The boats will be docked at marinas throughout Newport after the race. Ida Lewis Yacht Club welcomes entrants in the race from all qualified boats 30’ and longer.
