As
a port city, Newport’s past and future are bound to the sea.
The Seamen’s Church Institute is an important componnent of
our community’s history, and a key to preserving Newport’s
unique character for the future.
Preserving character does not mean existing without change, however.
The Seamen’s Church Institute is currently engaged in a project
to modernize its facility and improve its services to mariners. The
newly named “Henry H. Anderson, Jr. Library for Mariners” will
soon provide a place to read, study, do research and connect to the
Internet for visiting seafarers. Upgraded bathrooms, laundry and residential
facilities are already in place, and full handicapped accessibility
plus new upgrades to the café are planned. |
The SCI must raise a total of $2.5 million to modernize
its historic waterfront home, create an endowment, and prepare for
86 more years of service. This year, the Seamen’s needs your
help. $800,000 has been raised, and $1.7 million more must be found.
Please help us continue this important work.
