Ocean Pros of Newport, RI has recently joined the ranks of an elite group of maritime training facilities offering world class training. The company now offers International Yachtmaster Certification, the most sought after global yachting certification for professional yacht crews and the serious recreational yachtsmen. The programs available at Ocean Pros are recognized by 24 governments throughout the world. Upon successful completion of the training, graduates will be licensed to work on almost any yacht in the world, including red-ensign flagged yachts.

A difficult challenge for owners and crew members is finding a training location and schedule that doesn’t conflict with operation of their yacht. Ocean Pro’s waterfront location on Goat Island can be accessed by any launch and will allow owners and crews to meet their training demands, without having to leave their yachts for extended periods of time. For crews not moored in Newport, Ocean Pros can assist in finding accommodations.

Candidates can earn their certification with a concentration on power or sail or both. Upon successful completion of the course, candidates will receive the International Yachtmaster Training “Yachtmaster Offshore” - Shore Based Certificate, a Radio Communications Certificate, an S.T.C.W. 95 Basic Safety Training Certificate, a British Maritime Coastguard Authority recognized IYT Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competency, and U.S. students will receive a 200 Ton Masters license once they fulfill the US Coast Guard requirements for the 200 Ton license.

On some yachts, S.T.C.W. Basic Safety Training is required for all crew from the deck to steward’s departments. Ocean Pros offers S.T.C.W. training as a stand-alone course to accommodate varying needs of all yacht’s crews. Yachts with larger crews can even elect to have Ocean Pros conduct their required S.T.C.W. training exclusively for their crew members.

Ocean Pros has developed a reputation over the years of training some of the best captains available by operating on the simple yet effective philosophy of quality over quantity. Ocean Pros’ objective is for students to obtain the highest level of skill and knowledge possible. Class sizes are small with a low student to teacher ratio to ensure students receive the same level of quality in their training that they’ll be expected to perform while running their yachts.

Prior sea-time is required for enrollment in the Yachtmaster program, and the course is demanding. Throughout the three week program, students will spend classroom time learning navigation and theory, complete a five day training cruise, learn to fight live fires, practice in-the-water survival techniques, and become certified in First-Aid and CPR. Each week of the course is treated as a separate module and does not need to be completed in consecutive weeks, allowing students flexibility in scheduling their training.
