On the west shore of Aquidneck Island just north of the Melville Marinas lies the 350- acre private Carnegie Abbey Club, comprising a Scottish links golf course designed by Donald Steel, an equestrian center, nature trails, tennis courts, a pro shop and Clubhouse with its 22 residences. There is also a 340-foot pier, floating docks and moorings. Adjacent is the Carnegie Harbor complex where there are 22 oceanfront home sites, 18 lakeside cottages and the former Kaiser Aluminum tower which will be transformed into a luxury condominium complex. The Club opened in July of 2000 and was the first new members club to open in the area in more than 100 years. The retreat, near Newport, has been home to Native Americans, colonist farmers, and Benedictine monks. It was also the site of the Battle of Rhode Island during the American Revolution. In 1998 Peter de Savary, the club’s founder, envisaged a plan to preserve the heritage, beauty and |
natural resources of the land while creating a private, exclusive, international members club with limited membership. Carnegie Abbey has been carved out of mature woodlands, rolling farmland and wetlands where wild flowers flourish in a natural habitat of wildlife. The development was the recipient of the Preservation Merit Award for landscape preservation awarded by Preserve Rhode Island in February 2002. Future plans for the complex include a 79-slip marina, currently undergoing approvals, a four-acre freshwater wetland and a public shoreline access path.
